Callaway County is one of the places where all three Missouri stories meet inside a single county line, which is why the soil report drives design here more than in most counties. The south of the county runs to the Ozark border with shallow soil over rock, the north and centre carry deeper till and loess soils, and the Missouri River bottoms along the southern edge are alluvium.
